Looks like Nike $NKE isn't able to just do it anymore. It will need a significant amount of energy and work to regain its place in stores. I remember reading in Phil Knight's Shoe Dog book that his coach Bill Bowerman felt that runners only had a limited number of all-out races in their legs. I think they were referring to the legendary runner Prefontaine who unfortunately died in a car crash late one night in Eugene, Oregon. Incidentally I was in Eugene last year with some friends for a Ducks game and we crossed Pre's rock a few times as we drove up to our Airbnb in the hills above the University of Oregon. I hope Nike has a few more all-out races left in it. Overall I don't feel like the brand is impaired in the eyes of consumers despite their recent preference for On $ONON and Hoka $DECK. Disclosure: I am long $ONON but have been watching $NKE closely.
Deckers trades at 11x forward earnings with $1.6 billion cash, no debt and aggressive buybacks, as HOKA growth and UGG profitability…
@ValueInvestShow $DECK is a heavy buyer of its own stock too. It repurchased $338M in Q1 alone, and the board added $3.5B in May, leaving $4.7B authorized as of June 30. Tho there's also ~$120M of old IEEPA tariffs it started filing to claw back that isn't in the guide yet.
Deckers built HOKA into a brand nearing UGG’s scale, with HOKA revenue up about fivefold since FY21.
Latticework’s weekly briefing covers NVIDIA’s AI demand, Deckers’ de-rating, Shurgard’s asset discount, Flitto’s translation-data backlog…
Deckers Outdoor $DECK increased its buyback authorization by $3.5bn to $5bn. Not bad for a ~$11bn market cap. And it makes sense: msd-hsd topline growth, >20% EBITDA margins, over 70% FCF conversion, strong and rapidly increasing net cash position. They bought back ~6.5% of s/o last year. 10x EV/EBITDA seems too low.
$DBI out with a beat-and-raise, strong commentary: "Our second quarter results represent significant improvement in profitability year-over-year, highlighted by meaningful gross margin expansion as well as impressive sales growth in our Brand Portfolio segment," said Doug Howe, Chief Executive Officer. "We remain focused on generating long term value for our shareholders and are encouraged by the progress we are making against our strategic plan. These efforts have contributed to improved retail trends and a positive start to the third quarter, giving us confidence in raising our full year guidance." This is a stark contrast to rival $SHOE, which is puking on poor results and citing heavy promotional activity, and suppliers $NKE and $DECK which are testing 52-week lows.
Commentary from $SHOE on Q2 results Footwear market sounds pretty awful right now Literally just wrote up $DECK and thinking might still be early https://t.co/gzUth0HisU
Deckers Outdoor has fallen about 60% from its late-2024 peak and trades at 11x earnings as HOKA growth slows.
@ValueInvestShow fashion cyclicality has destroyed many value investors! revenue is quickly decelerating and ebit margins are double a decade ago! not a single insider purchase in this 63% drawdown $DECK
$DKS $DECK both going back on my to-do list… https://t.co/GTbiN0YRAs
$DECK back at multi year low valuations but concern is the classic value trap risk that margins and ROC are at cyclical peaks. Growth has really fallen off too from 15-18% in 2023-2025 to just 7% in 2026. https://t.co/jvT5HnDjnH
@GHadjia @MattJMcClintock Growth has been coming off fast at $DECK no? https://t.co/NvAKB2OyqN
@finphysnerd @taobanker A sentiment check on X searching $DECK, its universally positive except @CatNyanpital who is the only bearish comments on this name. Doesn't mean it can't work though
Nike's stock $NKE is down almost an additional 10% since I wrote this in June and what is even more remarkable is that On Holding $ONON is down 31% over the last year. The company went public on September 15, 2021 at $24 per share and closed its first day of trading at $35. All the wins On Running had against Nike, didn't matter because the starting valuation the market afforded the company towards the tail end of the COVID-19 bull market was too high. I have a pair of On shoes and had almost forgotten how remarkably comfortable they are until I switched to an older pair of Asics for a day. Ever since my Skechers shares were acquired by the PE firm 3G Capital last year, I have been thinking about investing in a potential turnaround at Nike or betting on $ONON's growth but thankfully decided against either option. Decker's $DECK with its HOKA and UGG brands hasn't been too hot either, down 14% over the last year. The correct move would have been $CROX or Asics in the Japanese market. But that is hindsight bias. Looking forward, two insiders, including the Co-CEO of $ONON appear to be bullish about the company's future prospects and purchased $2 million worth of stock each according to a Form 4 filed yesterday. The same insiders including the other Co-CEO also purchased shares in May at higher prices. Insiders are often early and that could certainly be the case here but these purchases are making me take a fresh look at $ONON again.
$NKE SHOULD be getting tagged. So should $ONON and $DECK as Nike Futures are up so materially in the specialty running channel. But what the market is getting WRONG is taking $FL lower. FL is Nike's meal ticket to reaccelerating top line. It's a massive long here. It's a 2-3-bagger from here.
